Mouthguards
Injuries to the jaw and teeth are common in many recreational and sporting activities but can be easily prevented by mouth guards, also known as athletic mouth protectors or sports guards.
Mouth guards not only protect the teeth but can drastically reduce damage to the jaw and central nervous system (base of the brain) in traumatic injuries.
Most sporting organizations require athletes to wear mouthguards, and your child should too.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children who participate in potentially injurious activities should be fitted with a mouthguard to maintain the health and beauty of their smile in Brooklyn. You can find mouthguards at most sporting goods stores for less than $10.
How do mouthguards work?
Mouthguards fit over the teeth and form a sort of shield that protects the entire oral region from injury. They are also used to prevent tooth damage for those who grind their teeth while they sleep.
There are thousands of different mouthguards to choose from, but each one will help your child avoid major injury to the oral region. To be more specific, mouthguards can prevent all of the following:
Which mouthguard is right for my child?
Before purchasing your child’s mouthguard, be aware that there are three main types of mouthguards to choose from; stock mouthguards, boil and bite mouthguards, and customized mouthguards. You should also consider how much money you’re willing to spend, how often your child will be using the mouth guard, and what sports they play.
Oral injuries are most common for baseball and basketball players.
Here are some of the pros and cons of different types of mouthguards:
Stock mouthguards are the most easily accessible. They have a universal fit and can be used immediately after you buy them. These mouthguards tend to be very affordable, easy to use, and easy to find at your local sporting goods store. However, dentists believe that these mouthguards provide the least amount of protection. The fit may not be great for your child’s mouth, they can be uncomfortable, and they can obstruct proper speaking and breathing.
Boil and bite mouthguards are the next best thing. They are also easily found at sporting goods stores, though they may be a bit more expensive. They are made from thermoplastic and must be boiled and then pressed into your child’s teeth to create a custom mold for their mouth. These mouthguards tend to feel more comfortable and do not obstruct speaking or breathing.
Customized mouthguards are what most dentists recommend. These are mouthguards made specially by your dentist using an impression of your child’s teeth. The mouth guard is fitted to their mouth perfectly, making this the most comfortable and most orthodontically correct option. However, they are more expensive and take longer to make.
